Marquinhos targets third consecutive UCL title for PSG

Marquinhos says he is targeting to win a third consecutive UEFA Champions League title with Paris Saint-Germain.

The French giants won their second premier European title by defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Budapest on Saturday.

The result made PSG become the first French team to win back-to-back Champions League titles and the second team after Real Madrid under the competition’s current name.

Los Blancos were the first team to win the Champions League three times in a row between 2016 and 2018, and Marquinhos wants to emulate that.

“The feelings are different this year. Winning once is hard, winning two in a row is even harder!,” the Brazilian told the club website.

“We are going to celebrate this title in style. And we’ll keep partying tomorrow too! Thanks to everyone at the Parc des Princes, back in Paris… It’s unbelievable, we are living the dream.

“We have to keep moving in the right direction to continue to experience these great moments with our supporters, the club, the coach, the players… We have a very young squad, we can win a third in a row!”

Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also echoed Marquinhos’ thoughts, stating: “It’s a fantastic feeling. I was so tired, but when it was over, I still had the energy to sprint in joy! We did it!

“Thanks to our fans, to the club, the coach, my teammates. We are so proud tonight. We need to keep going in this direction now. We will try to win it again next season!”

Enrique acknowledges tough final

PSG boss Luis Enrique in his post-match comments acknowledged that Arsenal were a tough side.

The Gunners contained their threat for large parts of the game before misses from Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes in the shootout decided their fate.

“It’s even stronger this year because we knew before the game how hard it is to play this Arsenal side,” the Spaniard said.

“For us, as a team, as a city, it’s incredible to win it and we deserve it for the way we’ve played throughout this season. The final was very tight. But now is the time to celebrate with our supporters.”
