PSG president Al-Khelaifi hails historic Champions League feat

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has hailed the club following their historic triumph over Arsenal in Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final in Budapest.

PSG defeated the Gunners 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time, making them become the first French team to win the competition back-to-back.

They also joined Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid in being the only teams to win the tournament under its current name in consecutive seasons.

Reflecting on the achievement, Al-Khelaifi said in a statement on the club website: “This second consecutive Champions League title is more than just a historic moment.

“It marks the beginning of a legend for our club, for French football, and for our city. It is the culmination of a remarkable team effort, led by Luis Enrique, the players, and the coaching staff.

“I am extremely proud of our team, of its maturity, its character, and the way it has represented Paris Saint-Germain throughout this European campaign. I would also like to thank Luis Campos and all the club’s teams, who work behind the scenes every day to make all of this possible.

“Our thoughts go out to our fans: the 18,000 people who made the trip to Budapest, those gathered at the Parc des Princes in Paris, and all the Rouge & Bleu supporters across France and around the world. We share this title with them.”

More trophies for PSG under Al-Khelaifi

PSG’s Champions League triumph handed them their fifth trophy of the season after winning the UEFA Super Cup, Trophee des Champions, FIFA Intercontinental Cup and Ligue 1.

The total trophy haul of the club since Al-Khelaifi’s Qatar Sports Investments company took over in 2011 now stands at 42 titles (12 Ligue 1, eight Coupe de France, 12 Trophee des Champions, six Coupe de la Ligue, two UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Intercontinental Cup).
