Who Is Mika Godts? PSG’s Belgian Winger Profiled

Mika Godts is the Paris Saint-Germain summer signing most supporters have seen least of. He arrived from Ajax for a fee reported in the region of €45m, took the No.22 shirt, and walked straight into the deepest attacking department in European football — behind a Ballon d’Or winner, a Champions League final match-winner and a Georgian left-winger who has been close to untouchable for two seasons.

That is a difficult introduction for a 20-year-old. It is also, on the evidence of how Paris have recruited under Luis Enrique, exactly the point. Here is who Mika Godts is, how he got to the Parc des Princes, and what Paris are actually buying.

Who is Mika Godts?

Mika Godts is a Belgian winger, born in October 2005, who plays predominantly off the left flank. He is a dribbler first — quick over short distances, low to the ground, happiest running at a full-back with the touchline behind him and space to attack inside. He is not a target man, not a false nine, and not a player you sign to hold the ball up. He is a player you sign to beat somebody.

He came through the academy at Genk, one of the most productive development departments in Belgian football, before moving to Ajax as a teenager in 2022. That transfer raised eyebrows in Belgium at the time. It looks a great deal more sensible now.

The Ajax years

Godts broke into the Ajax first team during a genuinely chaotic period at the club — a squad in flux, managers coming and going, and a group of young players handed responsibility earlier than any of them would have been in a settled season. Some sank. Godts did not.

He established himself as a starter on the left of the Ajax attack and stayed there, which in that environment counts for a good deal more than a goal tally. Eredivisie football gave him something specific and useful: a league where opponents defend deep against Ajax, where the winger is asked to create out of a crowded space rather than run into an open one, and where a young player is expected to take the game by the collar rather than wait for it to come to him.

That is the profile Luis Enrique’s Paris side asks of its wide forwards almost every week. Teams sit in against Paris. Somebody has to unlock them.

Why PSG signed Mika Godts

The reported €45m fee makes sense once you look at the shape of the whole window rather than the individual deal. This was a summer of heavy trading at Paris. Gonçalo Ramos went to AC Milan, Randal Kolo Muani joined Juventus permanently, Lee Kang-in moved to Atlético Madrid, and on deadline day both Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye left for the Premier League. In came Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco, Ferran Torres from Barcelona, Lucas Digne from Aston Villa — and Godts.

Look at those departures closely and a pattern emerges. Paris sold attacking depth, largely to clubs who could promise regular football, and replaced it with players who fit a system rather than players who need one built around them. Godts is the youngest of that group and the one signed furthest ahead of need.

The recruitment department under Luis Campos has spent three years buying that way: identify the profile, buy it early, let the coach shape it. Nuno Mendes and Warren Zaïre-Emery were not finished players when they became fixtures either.

Where he fits in the Paris attack

This is the honest part. Godts is not walking into the team.

The left flank belongs to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is one of the best wingers in world football and shows no sign of relinquishing the position. Ousmane Dembélé carries the No.10. Désiré Doué is a starter in waiting on the right. Ferran Torres marked his own debut at Rennes with two goals. Akliouche arrived from Monaco for €50m and can play across the front.

What Godts has in his favour is the calendar. Paris are defending a Champions League title as back-to-back holders while chasing a Ligue 1 championship, with a Trophée des Champions defeat and a Super Cup win already behind them and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final in December. Luis Enrique rotates without sentiment and always has. Minutes exist for the players who convince him in training.

He made his competitive introduction in the 2-2 draw away at Rennes that opened the Ligue 1 season, and spoke afterwards about being determined to fight his way in — which is roughly the correct attitude for a 20-year-old in this dressing room. He has also described Paris, unprompted, as the best club in the world. Both things suggest a player who understood the queue he was joining before he joined it.

For how the wide roles actually function in this side, our explainer on Luis Enrique’s system is the useful companion piece.

The verdict

Godts is a bet, and Paris are comfortable making it because they have made it before and been right. The club is no longer assembling a squad of finished superstars; it is buying young players who fit a defined way of playing and trusting the coaching to do the rest. That approach produced two European Cups in succession, so it has earned the benefit of the doubt.

Whether Godts becomes a starter this season is a separate question from whether the signing was sound. He may spend 2026/27 as the fifth or sixth attacking option, learning the pressing triggers and taking his 20 minutes at a time. That would not be a failure. Kvaratskhelia will not be 25 forever, and Paris have just cashed in heavily on two academy-schooled wingers who wanted to play now rather than wait.
