Desire Doue Benched Twice, But PSG Insist There Is ‘No Demotion’

Desire Doue benched for a second game running would, at most clubs, be the opening line of a story about a young star losing his way. At Paris Saint-Germain in September 2026, it is something far more mundane — and, if L’Equipe are right, far less alarming than it looks from outside the Parc.

The France forward has watched each of the last two matches begin from the bench while Ferran Torres started ahead of him, and the French paper reported this week that Doue has slipped to fourth choice in Luis Enrique’s attacking order for now. Crucially, as relayed by PSG Talk, it also reported that nobody inside the club is remotely worried about it.

Desire Doue benched: what L’Equipe actually reported

The wording matters. L’Equipe describe Doue as going through a “less fortunate period” rather than anything resembling a slump, and state plainly that his two benchings were “purely circumstantial, and are in no way a demotion”. For a paper that rarely misses a chance to diagnose a crisis at Paris Saint-Germain, that is close to a character reference.

It also fits what Les Parisiens have been doing all month. This is a manager rationing minutes in September, not settling a pecking order for May. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, an established starter by any measure, was not used at all in the 6-1 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava, and nobody suggested he had been dropped either.

Ferran Torres has simply been too good to leave out

The other half of the explanation wears number nine. Ferran Torres, signed from Barcelona for €48.5m in the summer, took a hat-trick off Slovan on matchday one of the Champions League defence, then settled the trip to Brest with a first-time finish from 25 yards after Joao Neves fed Ousmane Dembele and Dembele back-heeled the ball into his path.

Four goals across those two games, and the only goal in a 1-0 win that finally got PSG’s league season moving, is not a run any manager interrupts on principle. Doue has lost his place to form, not to a verdict.

A squad assembled for exactly this problem

Luis Enrique’s forward options now read Dembele (10), Kvaratskhelia (7), Torres (9), Doue (14), Mika Godts (22) and Quentin Ndjantou (47), with Maghnes Akliouche able to push forward from midfield. Roughly €140m of attacking recruitment arrived this summer in Akliouche, Torres and Godts, and it arrived with the explicit intention of making every shirt uncomfortable.

That is the deal the club signed up to. Win the Champions League twice, buy three more forwards, and someone excellent sits out most weekends. Doue, who still went close in the win at Brest, is the one absorbing it this month.

The wider picture is hardly settled anyway. PSG have taken five points from four Ligue 1 matches — 2-2 draws away at Rennes and Lille, a home defeat to Monaco and the win in Brittany — while the European defence opened with those six goals against Slovan. What happens next for Doue

PSG Talk expect Le Classique away at Marseille to be the next assignment, and Luis Enrique may be forced into changes regardless: the club’s own medical bulletin, reported this week, describes Achraf Hakimi’s problem as a minor right-thigh strain picked up at Brest. A reshuffled side is rarely the moment to leave a player of Doue’s range on the bench.

Beyond that, the evidence of last season is the strongest argument in his favour. Luis Enrique trusted Doue repeatedly on the way to a retained European Cup, and the manager’s habit of loading his key players’ minutes towards the knockout rounds is by now well documented. If you want the background on how he got here, our profile of who Desire Doue is covers the background.

Two games on the bench in mid-September is not a demotion. It is what a genuinely deep squad looks like when it is working — and Doue has the rest of the season to make the point himself.
