Paris Saint-Germain have reached a verbal agreement to sign Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne, a decade after he left the club for Barcelona.
According to a fresh update from Fabrizio Romano, Digne has already agreed personal terms on a return to Paris, with the move emerging out of nowhere on Monday after first being reported by the English press. Paris have informed Aston Villa that they will trigger the France international’s release clause, put at under €10million, once the World Cup finishes this weekend, with the 32-year-old lined up as Nuno Mendes’ back-up for the season ahead.
Luis Enrique Set To Reunite With Barcelona-Era Full-Back
RMC Sport has since confirmed the terms, reporting that Digne will sign a three-year contract at Paris, running until the summer of 2029, with the two parties already in full agreement over personal terms.
Le Parisien adds that talks between the club and the player’s camp had been running quietly for several weeks before Monday’s reveal, catching much of the Paris fanbase — who had not previously linked the France international with a move — by surprise. Villa, who have already had to knock back interest in academy graduate Morgan Rogers this summer, are now set to lose a first-team regular for a cut-price fee.
Digne played for Paris between 2013 and 2016 before a loan at Roma and a permanent move to Barcelona, where he first worked under current head coach Luis Enrique — a relationship the Spaniard is understood to value highly as he adds experienced depth to his title-winning squad.
The move also sets up an intriguing subplot: Paris and Aston Villa are due to meet in the UEFA Super Cup on 12 August, a fixture Digne could now be lining up for on the opposite side to the club he is about to leave.
