Joao Pinheiro has been selected as the centre referee for Paris Saint-Germain’s tie away at Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday.
It will mark the first time the Portuguese has officiated a Champions League semi-final match, making it the most high profile game of his career.
Pinheiro previously officiated the round of 16 first leg tie between Club Brugge and Aston Villa last season.
The latter won the game 3-1 on Belgian soil and ultimately 6-1 on aggregate, going on to meet PSG in the quarter-finals where they lost 5-4 on aggregate.
Pinheiro was however the fourth official in last season’s final between PSG and Inter Milan in Munich, which the Parisians won 5-0. He was also in charge of the UEFA Super Cup clash between the French side and Tottenham Hotspur, PSG winning 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
The 38-year-old officiated Bayern’s final league phase ties against Slovan Bratislava last term and PSV Eindhoven this season, both games ended in 3-1 and 2-1 victories respectively.
PSG fans to show support in Munich
According to RMC Sport, 3,700 PSG supporters are expected to travel to the Allianz Arena, with tickets sold out very fast.
Meanwhile, buses that will convey the PSG ultras are expected to depart the Parc des Princes on Tuesday evening.
