PSG edge past Bayern in nine-goal thriller in UCL semi-final first leg

Paris Saint-Germain came out all guns blazing as they recorded an epic 5-4 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.

The fixture was expected to feature lots of goals after PSG got the better of Liverpool 4-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals while Bayern overcame Real Madrid 6-4 on aggregate.

The game saw the return of left-back Nuno Mendes to the lineup after starting Saturday’s Ligue 1 win at Angers from the bench, while midfielder Vitinha was back after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.

Harry Kane put Bayern in front in 17th minute from the penalty spot after William Pacho brought down Luis Diaz in the box.

PSG however responded to go 2-1 up through strikes from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Joao Neves. Michael Olide leveled for Bayern in the 41st minute only for current Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele to put PSG 3-2 in added time from the spot after Alphonso Davies handled the ball in the box.

The reigning European champions extended their lead in the second half as Kvaratskhelia and Dembele completed their braces in 56th and 58th minute respectively while Bayern tried to force their way back through strikes from Dayot Upamecano and Diaz in the 65th and 68th minute respectively.

Vincent Kompany’s men could not find any further goal as PSG held on for the win ahead of the second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
