Bradley Barcola gave Liverpool a scare on his Champions League debut for the club, limping out of Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield with a hand on his calf. The verdict afterwards was the one everybody wanted: cramp, not a tear.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola confirmed as much post-match, per Get French Football News, saying there was no injury and that the winger is expected to be available to face Fulham on Saturday. Barcola was withdrawn in the 60th minute having already played in the Premier League at the weekend.
Why Paris are still watching Bradley Barcola
Because a fee that size never really stops being news. Barcola left the Parc des Princes on deadline day for a package reported to run as high as €140m, the largest single piece of a summer in which Paris also sold Ibrahim Mbaye to Aston Villa for €55m and let Renato Sanches go as a free agent after terminating his contract.
That trading is the reason PSG were named the best-balanced club in world football by the CIES Football Observatory this week, taking in €207m more than they spent across 2026. Selling well is only half the argument, though. The other half is whether the player you sold thrives, and every Barcola highlight on Merseyside will be measured in Paris against a front line that has just put six past Slovan Bratislava without him.
There is no serious case yet that Luis Enrique got it wrong. Ferran Torres arrived from Barcelona for a reported €48.5m, took the number nine, and scored a hat-trick in the Champions League opener. Maghnes Akliouche came in from Monaco and Mika Godts from Ajax. The width Barcola provided has been replaced several times over on paper. But Paris are also winless in Ligue 1 after three games — two draws and a 2-1 defeat by Monaco — and seven points behind the league leaders, so the sale will be relitigated by somebody every time the attack stalls.
The France squad question
The timing of Wednesday’s scare mattered for a second reason. Zinedine Zidane names his first squad as France manager on 18 September, and Barcola remains in contention for it. A calf problem a week out would have been the worst possible advert; cramp in a Champions League win is nothing at all.
The provisional list is already circulating in the French press. RMC Sport, via GFFN, report that Inter Milan right-back Andy Diouf and Stade Rennais forward Esteban Lepaul — last season’s Ligue 1 top scorer with 21 league goals — have both made the enlarged squad, neither of whom has been capped at senior level. Zidane has four Nations League group matches to fill in the coming weeks, which usually means a wider net than a tournament window allows.
No PSG player has been confirmed in that provisional list in anything published so far, and it would be a surprise if the champions of Europe were not represented when the final names land. Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue both went to the World Cup this summer, and Warren Zaire-Emery, Lucas Hernandez and Lucas Digne are all in the French pool. Dembele, back to something like his best with two goals and two assists against Slovan, has picked a useful week to remind the new manager what he does.
What happens next
Barcola should face Fulham on Saturday. PSG return to Ligue 1 needing a first league win of the season, and their French contingent will find out on 18 September who Zidane wants. For a club that spent most of August fielding bids for the same winger, the sight of him pulling up at Anfield produced an oddly familiar feeling in Paris — the story is not quite finished yet. Our record of how the move came together has the full timeline.
