Al-Khelaifi Barcola Verdict: PSG President Breaks Silence

The Al-Khelaifi Barcola question could not stay unanswered forever. With Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain reported to have settled on a fee in the region of £120m for Bradley Barcola, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi finally addressed the biggest sale in the club’s history on Thursday — the same day Les Parisiens learned their Champions League league phase opponents.

The Al-Khelaifi Barcola response

Foot Mercato reported that Al-Khelaïfi gave his answer on Barcola, while Le10Sport framed the moment as the president finally speaking on a record transfer it described as unprecedented in PSG’s history. English-language coverage picked it up quickly too, with DaveOCKOP reporting the Qatari’s response to the deal from a Liverpool angle.

Paris have published no official statement confirming a completed transfer, and nothing has been announced by either club. What is on the record is that the reported fee would comfortably beat anything PSG have banked before — ahead of the €74m AC Milan paid for Gonçalo Ramos this summer, and the €38m Juventus spent to make Randal Kolo Muani’s move permanent. We covered the reported agreement in full in our story on the record £120m deal between Liverpool and PSG.

Context matters here. The window does not shut until 1 September, Barcola has not featured in the opening rounds of the Ligue 1 season, and Luis Enrique has spent August integrating a rebuilt front line: Ferran Torres arrived from Barcelona for €48.5m, Mika Godts came in from Ajax, and Maghnes Akliouche signed from Monaco. If Barcola does go, Paris are not short of bodies in the wide areas.

Dembele called "tired" — and Luis Enrique agrees

The president also set the record straight on Ousmane Dembelé, according to Foot Mercato. Maxifoot’s report of his comments carried the key word: Al-Khelaïfi described the forward as « fatigué » — tired.

That lines up with what the touchline has been saying. FotMob reported that Luis Enrique defended his decision to give Dembelé extra rest, a call that has already shaped a matchday squad this month. Nobody at the club has framed this as an injury, and no fitness problem has been confirmed — the language from both president and coach is about workload, not the treatment table.

It is a sensible line to hold. Dembelé is fresh off a season that ended with a second straight European title, and Paris travel to Lille in Ligue 1 on Friday. Managing him in August is cheaper than replacing him in November.

Barcelona at the Parc: "a great match for the whole world"

Thursday’s draw handed PSG a serious itinerary. The holders will host Barcelona, Roma, Galatasaray and Bratislava at the Parc des Princes, and travel to Manchester City, Aston Villa, Villarreal and Como, per Get French Football News. Our full breakdown of the 2026/27 league phase opponents has the lot.

Al-Khelaïfi did not sound remotely bothered. Le Parisien reported him as eager for the Barcelona tie, calling it « un grand match pour le monde entier » — a great match for the whole world. Maxifoot separately reported that he was asked about a third European star and gave his answer on that too.

Luis Enrique against the club he won a treble with, at the Parc, with Ferran Torres now in Paris colours: it is not a fixture any president talks down.

What it means for Paris

Three threads, one afternoon. A record sale the club will not confirm until it is signed. A star forward being protected rather than patched up. And a European campaign that opens against two of the heaviest names in the draw.

The timing was no accident. With the window closing on 1 September and the league phase looming, Al-Khelaïfi used a single round of questions to put the club’s version of all three stories on the table. Whether Barcola’s departure is confirmed before Monday is the only part still genuinely open.
