For the first time in Ligue 1 history, the referee’s public address system will be tested during Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 clash against Toulouse on Friday.
The centre-referee will be able to address fans in Parc des Princes and explain his decision if the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervenes.
The innovative approach comes just eight years after the VAR was officially introduced in the Ligue 1 in the 2018-19 season.
The communication between the referee and the VAR is aimed to provide real-time broadcasting experience for spectators in the stands and viewers of the Ligue 1 through the league’s official streaming platform, Ligue 1+.
During his press briefing on Thursday, PSG coach Luis Enrique described the use of referee’s PA system as a step in the right direction for the development of French development.
“I’m always open to things that can improve football,” Enrique said. “If the referee can explain his decisions to the fans, players and coaches, I think that’s positive.
“I’m open to anything that can make football better and that everyone can enjoy.”
What to expect in PSG vs Toulouse match
Paris Saint-Germain head into their 28th league game of the season with one-point dominance atop of the French top-flight while Toulouse sit ninth on the table with 37 points.
The first-team quartet of Quentin Ndjantou, Bradley Barcola, Senny Mayulu, and Fabian Ruiz remain doubtful for Friday’s game.
