Having both received two yellow cards in the Champions League this season, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (25) and Nuno Mendes (23) could face suspension for a potential quarter-final first leg should they pick up a third booking and Paris Saint-Germain manage to qualify against Chelsea.
According to Article 63.02 of the competition regulations, “from the first match of the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after receiving three cautions that have not resulted in a red card, as well as after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).”
A major warning for Kvaratskhelia, booked against Sporting CP and in the first leg of the round of 16, as well as for Mendes, cautioned against FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, both key players in Luis Enrique’s squad.
Expected to be in the starting line-up to face the Blues at Stamford Bridge this Tuesday, the two players from the capital club will therefore be playing with a sword of Damocles hanging over their heads.
As a reminder, all yellow cards are reset at the end of the quarter-finals, meaning the tally is wiped clean ahead of the semi-finals and the final.
